Hiya!

I know it is mid-week but I hope you are having a great week and things are working for you, productivity at work, peace at home, peace in your heart and assurance for brighter days.

Whenever you watch a relay race, how do you feel? Are watching the speed of your favourite team and runner or are you waiting for the time when the first athlete hands over the baton to the next so that your team can stay ahead? I know I do all of these things whilst almost helping the athletes run their race from my living room.

However, one thing makes it possible for any team to complete the race and be successful. This is……..

If the previous runner places the baton firmly into the hands of the next runner and does his part to make sure the baton does not drop, ensuring that precious time is not lost. It is also the responsibility of the athlete receiving the baton to be willing to grasp the baton firmly, securing his or her place in the race and maximising his or her opportunity to contribute to the race, finish or win the race.

Let me connect this to raising children.

When you stretch your hands to pass the baton of responsible living and Godly living to your children, there is no  guarantee that they will receive it if you do not keep your eyes on the baton to ensure that you hand it over firmly. You also need to make sure that your child receives the baton, holds it firmly, holds on to it, runs with it and can hand it over firmly too.

In essence, as parents, we are not merely raising our children to receive the baton, we are indeed training them to be  able to hold on to it long enough to pass it on firmly. In other words, we are looking ahead. We are thinking generations. Each athlete in a race represents a generation, so when we pass the baton on, this is our aim. We think legacy. We think long-term and ensure that what we pass on is held on to firmly enough to be passed on as well.

I want to encourage you to keep doing all the right things you are doing to raise your children. Watch over the things you do by being intentional, see that they stick, set the right examples, commit them into God’s hands, pray for your children and build a strong legacy.
